Food for Kids is a service project proudly started by the Rockwall County Kiwanis Club a few years ago. We were looking for a service project that would focus on the children in Rockwall County. It was pointed out to us that there were many children in the RISD on the free and reduced meal program that had very little or nothing to eat over the weekends. We determined to focus on these children and find a way to give them food for the weekend that would be both easy for them to prepare and food that they would want to eat.
Today our club provides 1000+ food bags every month during the school year for children to take home on Fridays to have nutritious food over the weekend.
We serve the following Schools and organizations:
Children are selected for this program by teachers, counselors and staff who are familiar with their situations and know of the need.
During the school year, on the second or third Tuesday of each month our club meets to prepare these bags for distribution. Food is purchased from Costco, sorted and put in donated plastic bags. The bags are then counted and put in tubs to be taken to the various locations to be given to the children. If this is a project that you would like to support, check our Facebook page for the event dates and details, or click the calendar link below. We love new and returning volunteers. We also welcome financial support. There are more children that need our help and the cost of food continues to increase. Please contact one of our members or call us at 972-722-6001 to discuss how you can be a part of this great program.
